The Reiki's teaching has been divided into different levels from the beginning. Usui Master divided the system into three levels or courses, called: Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden, meaning first, second and third grade. Some schools still teach Reiki following that three levels. The teacher Hayashi created his own style of Reiki and taught in six levels. Although the most common that we can find today is teaching four courses, which would become: Level I, Level II, Level III and Masters.
If you read our section on the history of Reiki and Reiki Systems section, you will have to realize that there are now numerous systems and ways of thinking and teach Reiki. This section will explain the relationship levels-teachings of the two main systems of Reiki today: Traditional Japanese Reiki and Usui Tibetan Reiki (Reiki West).
In the Tibetan Usui Reiki system learn the foundations of channeling energy through the hands, the use of symbols, meditations and a basic work with energy. Usually we do not learn symbols to the second level, although this can vary by teacher. Usui Tibetan Reiki is divided into the following levels or courses:
Level I. This level is an introduction to Reiki system, but already very full and independent. In this system, we can learn the basics of Reiki: What is, what it does, its history, principles of Reiki, Chakras, etc. On a practical level, the student receives a Reiki initiation aligning it with the Universal Energy and awakens the ability to channel that energy. After performing this level one we can practice Reiki to us and to other people with no problem. The course usually includes Reiki practices among attendees, where students practice Reiki with each other and group. The first level is suitable for everyone.
Level II. To make this level is required to have done the previous level. The longer you've been practicing what you've learned in the first level will draw more juice to the second. In the second level you learn to use symbols and the distance transmission of the energy. Not only can transmit energy to the imposition of hands, but mentally we can send energy to a person who is far from us. At this level you learn to use Reiki to focus on the healing of emotional and mental problems, as could be stress and depression. At the second level we receive the Cho-Ku-Rei, Sei-He-Ki and Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen symbols.
Level III. In this level the Reiki healing is finished, learning to perform psychic surgery, which is a very powerful healing technique. It gives a more spiritual approach of Reiki, both personally and therapeutically. You learn meditations oriented to the internal development. Also you will receive new symbols, namely Dai-Koo-Myo Usui and Raku. In some systems the Dai-Koo-Myo Usui and the Dai-Ko-Myo Tibetan or Traditional.
Reiki Master. At this level you learn everything you need to teach Reiki to others. It explains the whole process of initiation for each of the different levels. You receive the Dai-Ko-Myo Tibetan and Tibetan Fire Serpent. In some systems is received Raku and the Fire Snake. In other variants we can also receive other symbols like the Fire Dragon or Dummo.
In Traditional Japanese Reiki system we find the following division of levels:
Shoden, the entrance. Were we taught the basics of Traditional Japanese Reiki, history, etc.. We learn the following techniques: Byosen Reikan-Ho, wich is a scan to detect areas where energy is needed. Tandem Chyrio-Ho, detoxification technique. Ketsueki Kokan-Ho, body cleansing. Joka-Ho Hakikiri purification of negative energy. Kokyu Hado-Ho, vibrational breathing, among other techniques and also learn Gassho meditation and connect with the Reiki energy. In Reido Reiki's school you learn the Koriki symbol. Generally in the other schools symbols are not taught to the second level.
Okuden, deep knowledge. Taught working with symbols and power transmission distance. Also the following Japanese techniques: Nentatsu-Ho, messages to the subconscious. Meiso Hado-Ho, vibrational meditation, Reiki Mawashi, Reiki circle. Hatsurei-Ho, different techniques of meditation and purification. Chakra Kassei Kokyo-Ho, activating Chakras meditation, among other techniques. We learn the symbols Zui-A-Honja Fukuyu and Ze-Shonen.
Shinpiden, mysterious knowledge. We will learn the Master Symbol and the process of transmission of teaching Reiki initiations Reiju, etc. We also learn the art Ibuki Sekizui Joka-ho, cleaning the spine. Usually it is do it a review of all the techniques of Traditional Japanese Reiki system. Also it is taught special meditations and techniques to autoiniciarse. We learn the master symbol Dai-Koo-Myo Usui, Japanese version.
The set of techniques taught in Traditional Japanese Reiki system can vary depending on the teacher, school or subsystem Japanese Reiki. Although roughly all reach the same goal. Usually learn a set of techniques to apply them to other people, who are often a mixture of Shiatsu and Reiki, clapping, rubbing, acupressure, etc.. And another set of techniques for self, aimed at the purification and vibrational level rise.
Also that system have their hand positions that mostly based on scanning (Byosen) prior to the transmission of Reiki. In times of Hayashi, until a student had not mastered the art of scanning could not keep the following Reiki lessons Reiki.
Many people who start in the world of Reiki wonders how long has to pass from one level to another. Basically it would take at least 21 to 30 days, which is what does the internal setting that causes vibrational receive an initiation. But, at a level to absorb and really learn the content of a course of 6 months to 1 year between levels would be appropriate. Do not want to hurry to reach the final and become teachers. It will be much more teacher a person issuing the 4 levels in 3 or 4 years practicing extensively each level that a person who has made the 4 courses in 4 months. Try listening to your interior and really feel when you're ready to go a little further. Our soul and God is in no hurry either.
Nor is it necessary to study all levels to do Reiki to yourself or others. The more we learn will be better, but therapeutic level, for example, take only levels I and II and have enough skills and resources to devote to healing. Each person must listen inside to know how far they want to go, to find out if there is a therapist inside, a teacher or just a light worker.
